I use the sport lens on a 6D and used the focal software to calibrate it as I have done with a few of my other lenses.I had to upgrade to the pro version for the 600mm focal length.I have had no problems what so ever with my other lenses but focal repeatedly gave me incorrect settings for my lens,it recommended +9 where in fact a -6 adjustment gave the sharpest shots.I have sent a snotty email to focal but have heard nothing.I am more surprised then anything because previously the software has been great. Now there's a waste of money!īTW, even after I used all these tuning methods, I still had to tweek my settings, because I found my Sigma was a bit front focused. I can say for certain that, while not perfect, either of these methods is better than the Focus Pyramid that I bought. Some combination of these two systems would be ideal. You have to use their proprietary (and expensive) target system, fine tune the alignment, fire hundreds of test images for every lens you tune, and the distance between a 600mm lens and the test target is immense. Nonsense!įocus Tune has its own special quirks too. It requires installation of the "Mono framework runtime" (also from an unaffiliated developer) to work with OS/X, (but you can't use the current iteration, you have to find an older version somewhere), then you have to remember a bunch of silly things, like removing your memory cards before starting.

It's not from an affiliated developer, so it upsets all my security settings.

Yup, as Steve Jobs would've said, FoCal is a bag of hurt for Mac users. The software seemed to run fairly well, but, that may change when I increase the distance between the camera & target. I'm a little annoyed that when I run FoCal on a Mac I can only use it on one manufacturer, in my case Nikon. My understanding is that I need to double their reading for the purpose of the dock? (ie +5 needs to be input as +10) The dock requires 600mm at 2.6m as opposed to their 12m! So I'm not sure if the fine tune readings are true. The worry I have with the FoCal software, is their recommended distance from camera to target (20圆00). Thanks Rob, I tried the FoCal this evening & fine tuned the four focal lengths (150,250,400,600) at 2.6 metres. The Sigma is a big load, but nothing compared to my video camera. I used my big Manfrotto video sticks, with a Benro S8 fluid head. Whatever software you choose, it's vital to use a sturdy tripod. Focus Tune has it's quirks, but it runs fairly well on a Mac, once you hammer out the workflow for it. :( There is an updated version 2 coming for Macs, and I certainly hope it resolves the many issues I've encountered. I find the current FoCal performs very poorly on my iMac - not well thought out software, at all. I do have FoCal Pro, but I used Focus Tune to calibrate my 150-600s (both the Tamron and my Sigma Sport). I've just purchased the above software to fine tune the Sigma 150-600 sport and then enter the results into the sigma optimisation software via the dock.
